Jack Drury - Adirondack Guide since 1972
Jack in Scotland
Jack Drury has been an Adirondack guide since 1972 and spent a major portion of his professional career in the outdoors. Jack was the founding Director of the Wilderness Recreation Leadership Program at North Country Community College where for over twenty years he led a variety of trips including 35-day trips in the summer and fall and fourteen-day trips in the winter. Although he has hiked, canoed, skied or snowshoed a vast portion of the Adirondack Park he realizes that, in reality, he has barely scratched the surface of the six million acre playground.
Jack has not only traveled and led others throughout the Adirondacks but in many other regions of the world as well. He has traveled extensively throughout numerous Wilderness Areas in the United States including climbing North America’s highest peak Mt. McKinley, Alaska. He has paddled some of the northern rivers of Canada and was fortunate enough to travel above the Arctic Circle in far eastern Siberia. In addition he has sailed in such diverse areas as the Caribbean and the coast of Newfoundland. He has also travel extensively in Europe, the middle east, and Central American.
Jack has written two books about the outdoors. Most recently a second edition of The Backcountry Classroom: Lessons, Tools, and Activities for Teaching Outdoor Leaders was released by Globe-Pequot’s Falcon Press. Jack is the lead author and editor of this definitive classroom text. Jack teamed up with Eric Holmlund to write The Camper’s Guide To Outdoor Pursuits a thorough and humorous book for the novice camper.
Jack has also played a leadership role nationally in wilderness leadership. He was on the Board of Directors for the Wilderness Education Association for ten years and was President for three. He has participated in a variety of outdoor experiences with the Wilderness Education Association, National Outdoor Leadership School and Outward Bound.
Jack is currently the vice president of Leading EDGE, a professional development organization specializing in bringing student-centered, problem-based, experiential, and collaborative teaching strategies to schools around the world. He also makes presentations on his ventures and conducts workshops on a variety of outdoor topics.
If you are looking for a leisurely paced guided hike or paddle to some of the nicest parts of the Adirondack Park you have come to the right place.
